Group Dynamics – Help finding suitable video clips

default-16x9

I have been asked to find 2 or 3 free video clips regarding group dynamics which meet the following criteria;

- between 5 and 15 minutes
- is funny but still "politically correct" i.e. not racist, sexist.
- deals with group dynamics or working together to achieve something as a group
- does not rely on visual humour (i.e. there will be blind people in the
group)
- touches on themes of power, conflict, leadership, delegation, giving and receiving feedback and trust in groups.

I haven't been very successful in finding anything suitable on Youtube so far.

If there is anything that you think would be useful and you don't mind sharing it then I'd really appreciate it!

Thank you

  1. Big Ask

    Hi Sarah

Sounds like quite a big ask and not suprised Youtube didn’t come up trumps.

My idea would be to use clips from Prime Ministers Question Time on Wednesdays. (I am guessing you are in the UK, don’t know why?)

It shows examples of common aims, group dynamics, power, conflict, leadership and delegation. It’s also current and topical so about as real life as you will get.

Great for delegate engagement as they will all have an opinion and I think ticks all of your boxes?

A good way of teaching when using videos is to stop at set times (ie 1min 3secs, 2min 15secs etc etc) When the video is stopped you have pre written questions given to the delegates to answer in small groups. ie

1 min 3 secs – Who has the most power in the conversation and why?

2 min 15 secs – If you were XXXX how would you make sure your collegaues were all behind your idea?

    Good luck

Lots of examples available on Youtube and newspapaper websites.

  2. word of caution

    Hi Sarah

Just a brief word of caution – just cos a video is in the public domain (Youtube) it doesn’t mean it’s ‘free’, free of copyright or that you or I have any legal right to ‘broadcast’ it in a commercial (my assumption of your intended use) training environment.  Many organizations have ‘guiding principles’ or ‘codes of ethical practice’ which prohibit such use.

    Just a thought 🙂

I’d also urge caution. I’m not quite sure why you have been asked for such clips but it does seem a rather odd first choice if there are to be blind people in the audience. Combine that with licensing issues and I’m wondering if it is worthwhile.

I guess that comes back the purpose of the session. Group dynamics is a broad area. Are you wanting to look at the stages of group development, the roles people adopt, power issues, conflict, how people communicate, high performance or disfunctionality?

Whichever option, you might want to think of an alternative in case you can’t find or show a suitable clip. With a bit more of a steer, the TZ community might be able to help suggest a suitable alternative.

    Best of luck

    Graham
