Generate: What are your top tips for delivering great L&D on a budget?

A week and a half ago now, but still the content keeps coming from our Generate initiative with Towards Maturity. And what a great question this one is, albeit one with a wide variety of utility in its answers. What would you add to this wall of info?

What are your top tips for delivering great L&D on a budget?

  • Do a thorough LNA/TNA
  • Develop an in-house free social network
  • Use all the business resources you have e.g. SMEs
  • Use MOOCS!
  • Don’t use MOOCs use SPOCs!
  • Give everyone the power to edit
  • Use in-house options: job swaps, secondments, projects
  • Text-based scenarios can be just as good as elearning
  • Make your own pictures, drawings and videos
  • Online reduces fixed costs e.g., travel, accommodation
  • Build an open-source resource library
  • Set up a trial group - under promise and over deliver 
  • Base decisions around problem
  • Make sure everyone is on the same page and keeping inside budget
  • Optimise technology

  • Think big and broad before tailoring for individuals
  • Use delegates prior experience to form core
  • Collaborate
  • Look outward
  • Understand the new stuff coming through
  • Learn from the third sector
  • Make L&D not budget the focus
