“Annual Appraisals” – Old hat?

default-16x9

We are reviewing our annual appraisals - basically everything to do with it including what we call it. I'm interested to know what other people call their appraisal process. Is the word "appraisals" a bit old fashioned now?

Thx

  1. A rose by any other name?

One of the reasons that people don't like 'appraisals' is that they have bad experiences of being sat down by their line manager and 'told' how they've done, with no opportunity for input or discussion. They therefore feel it's a waste of time at best and de-motivating at worst. Call it what you like, (appraisal, review, target setting) but ensure it's conducted effectively.

My firm has a PDR (Personal Development Review).

I would agree though that, call it what you will, it needs to be effectively conducted.

  3. What do you staff think?

    Hiya,

Whilst I agree with the others that the most important thing is that they are conducted effectively, I do think that how they are framed and the perception someone has of the process will impact how they engage and interact with it.

To my mind the term "appraisal" sounds like something that is done to me. It conjures images of m line manager sitting down with me and telling me what they think of my and my performance.

Of course, we all know that the most effective reviews are two-way and involve both the employee and the line manager having input into the discussion so perhaps this is partly why there has been a change of terminology to "reviews" etc.

You have probably thought of this already, but I wonder what the staff in your organisation think about the term?

    Good luck with the review.

    F.
