Best book for a new first time line manager?

default-16x9

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good book for a new first line manager (never line managed before) that would give them an idea of some of the key skills they should focus on developing.

Thanks

Mark

  1. The New Manager’s Handbook

Hi there Mark, I think if you want something succinct and not too heavy 'the New Manager's Handbook' is a good starting place.  Can't remember the author but I'm sure the publishers are McGraw Hill.

It is really a starting guide and I know there's much more weightier tomes but this is a good starting point.  Then there's 'The One Minute Manager' by Ken Blanchard but think that's better for slightly more established managers.  Hope that helps.

  2. How to be an even better manager

    Hi Mark,

there literally dozens of books out there. One that has stood the test of time and now into it's sixth edition is "How to be an even better manager" by Michael Armstrong.

    Cheers, Paul

  3. One Minute Manager

I agree with Gary. you can't beat the One Minute Manager for a quick look at Situational Leadership. Valuable concept! Might also want to look at the CHOICE model for NextGen Managers.

  4. One Minute Manager

I agree. Leadership and the One minute manager is a highly readable book and gets you thinking about how different people are motivated to improve.

  5. best book

I go with Garry's reccomentdation – the one minute manager – the one minute salesperson is also a good read for loking at building long-term relationships is you see part of your role as a manager as selling/promoting what you can do for others, I do.

    Cheers, Nick
