Recommendations on how to train the trainer?

Hi,

I am part of a small team of systems and process trainers in a large company, most of us have been in the job for at least 3 years. We have an opportunity to request funding support to obtain professional qualifications, only there are so many options out there! I would appreciate some opinions on the best courses to go for. We are looking for a widely recognised qualification that is going to add value to our roles and support what we already do on a daily basis. I have looked at CIPD, PTLLs, CTLLs, and TAP amongst others. How do we begin to rank these against each other and choose the best one?

  1. Train the Trainer

    Hi Jen, My personal experience has been the (LPI) Learning and Performance Institutes certified programmes:

    Certified Performance Consultant – this gives the trainer the skills to ensure that whatever training is being requested or suggested is going to give a Return on Investment and it meets the business objectives. I found this course really useful.

    Certified Trainer, the TPMA (Trainer Performance Monitoring Assessment) this is a very thorough course for classroom trainers, and trainers resit their assessment every 3 years. This is now a recognised programme by Microsoft, and goes towards the Microsoft Certified Trainer programme, so you get double the benefit.

    Finally for all those trainers that wish to deliver good virtual training, then COLF ( Certified On-line Learning Facilitator) A 12 week on-line programme with assessments. I learnt so much from this programme and highly recommend it. 

    I recommend you talk to Kelly Hamblett from the LPI.

    Hi there

    Having done CIPD, TAP and PTLLS I think it very much depends on what type of training you deliver and on your type of organisation.

    My feelings were that CIPD is very L&D Generalist and and was more for Leaders in the field. It was expected that the L&D practitioners had a direct involvement and influence on business strategy. Having trained in a Law firm, a college, the Police and NHS, I'd say this was only accurate for the Law firm.

    PTLLS was more focused on teaching rather than training though some skills are transferable. Good for when I was a sessional lecturer in a college.

    The TAP course I did was part of one of the (going back some years now) Institute of IT Trainers certified courses – they are now LPI as mentioned in Sue's reply. As an IT trainer I found this to be the best for my style of training and is probably the key one which has shaped my training style today and valuable in each of the areas I've worked (though I have taken good stuff from each of the courses).

    A lot of organisations ask for CIPD and PTLLS (etc) but if I had an influence I'd push towards LPI.

    This is of course just my personal preference and experience but I hope my insight helps a little.

  3. Skills-based, assessable?

    Hi Jen.

    TAP training is the only programme recognised by the Queen's Award for Innovation – for its skills-based, assessable learning methodologies. Previous commentators have mentioned the LPI and IITT. The Training Foundation, which offers TAP Training, was originally the IITT, until the IITT was sold to the LPI, but the IPR on TAP learning was not part of that sale.

    Inevitably, I have to recommend TAP for a skills-based, pragmatic, assessable learning process which will give you the skills you need to perform exceptionally. Please also notice that TAP uniquely offers a comprehensive suite of over 20 development programmes across facilitation, design, blended and elearning (design, delivery, assessment and implementation) L&D Consultancy and Management contained within it's Qualifications Framework, including critical 'assessor' programmes which can be accessed, enabling a business to coach, monitor and develop trainers around TAP skills. none of which is offered by other providers.
