Self Reflection on training sessions

default-16x9

Hi,

I would like to know what systems trainers have in place for reflecting on individual training sessions. Do people have any formal/informal systems in place? How useful is it to share these reflections?

Thanks

  1. Course log book

All of our courses have a log book where trainers record anything needs an action…this includes the following actions and fix dates. Any update means a new version number 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc

Materials / information out of date

    Materials / information missing

Delegate comments regarding any of the materials

Trainer comments regarding any of the materials

I think self reflection is personal and an addition to the course log book so doesn't need to be published.

    What went well

    What didn't go as planned

What would you do differently next time

  2. to add to Steve’s comment

Things I learned from the delegates that I can pass on to future learners.

These can be things about the client (if it is an in house course) or things directly relevant to the topic or the industry in other cases.

  3. Time!

I would add that it's important to formally review any log book of reflections at least once per month, otherwise it probably won't happen and book time out of your diary on a recurring basis. Great questions and process Rus and Rob. You both always add great value to these discussions.

    Regards,

    Adrian.

  4. Venues?

Agree with everything that others have contributed.  I would just add that my views and delegates' views on the venue are also important, to help those booking courses in the future.  I recently ran a course in a community centre and, because numbers had increased, we were moved from a meeting room to the dance studio!! This was a cavernous room with poor acoustics and, by the end of the day, my throat and chest hurt as I had to project my voice much more than normal, and some quietly spoken delegates struggled to be heard at all.  Not ideal.

  5. Our trainers are provided

Our trainers are provided with access to an online tool to provide feedback on the courses they are preparing to deliver or have delivered. They are asked a range of questions regarding timing, links to supporting resources, flow, content etc. Each month, this feedback is passed on to the Design and Development teams to consider and make improvements to the training material.

Another initiative is a 'community of practice' amongst trainers. Once someone is considered experienced in the delivery of a course, other trainers preparing to deliver the course can contact them for support.

While the first method is reactive and the second proactive, both methods are very useful in ensuring quality learning is delivered.

  6. Hi Kev,

    Hi Kev,

The online system is a web form survey built internally. There are nine quantitative questions and a final free-text question.
