Train the trainer practical skills

default-16x9

Hi

I'm designing a short practical training skills session (2 x half day). I'd like to include some media clips to vary the mix but can't find anything useful on YouTube. Can anyone help, please? I'm also looking for any practical skills activities colleagues have found useful.

Thanks

  1. Train the Trainer

    Hi Susanne,

I use a good ice-breaker in my Train the Trainer sessions as follows:

I give the delegates a piece of paper and ask them to write a single word on it and place it face down on the table. I then get them to swap the papers with other candidates then ask them to present on that topic in turn for 1 minute.

Not only does it spark conversation, but it also eases nerves. Afterwards I give lots of praise and reassure them that what they have just done will be the hardest presentation they will ever do because of the lack of preparation and planning. This leads in to the topic of how important it is to plan well and to know your subject.

In terms of media clips, try and find anything involving a good communicator (Ron Heifetz is good or Jim Kirkpatrick) and use that to show how good communication can capture an audience. There are some videos of Jim Kirkpatrick on the free resources section of the website http://www.kirkpatrickpartners.com/

Hope this can be of some use.

  2. Train the Trainer practical skills

This depends on how many attendees you have, but why not ask them to deliver to the rest of the group a 10 minute session on a topic of their choice? This will give everyone the opportunity to have a practice on training others, and afterwards you can give them appropriate feedback (against specific criteria like body language, delivery skills, facilitation, training resources, etc).  You can support and coach them from the start by viewing their sessions beforehand.

I did this in one of my previous jobs and we had some wonderful topics like: the transportation of bananas the UK, how to make a paper airplane and, would you believe, Bazalgette and London’s sewers (which was surprisingly interesting!). All attendees took part in the practical activities and had information/handout/guides to take away with them for referring to after the class.

    Hope this helps
