Training Qualifications

Hi all,

I've seen previous threads regarding this topic, but i'm still a little baffled.

I want to develop in the Training field. I am currently a trainer and have been for 12 months. I am looking to back that up with a formal qualification. I've come across TAP and CIPD. CIPD seems to aim towards HR related practices and less focus on training, yet seems to hold more weight than TAP.

I've been looking at CIPD Level 5 in L&D Management

Or The TAP Diploma in L&D Management

Any advice or guidance would be welcomed

    Hi

     

    I have just completed a CIPD qualification in L&D and found it hugely benifical, you are also right that CIPD seems to be the most highly recognised and I did the same thing when choosing by looking at both TAP and CIPD.

    I discussed both with lots of contacts and decided on CIPD purely based on the additional benifits of CIPD membership. Conferences, local networking groups and lots of online forums and support. In regards the actual learning I didnt think there was much dfference and although CIPD is slighly more focused on HR as long as you specialse your qualification you can make it much more L&D focused.

    Really depends if it is just the learning you need or your wanting to increase your profile and widen your horizons and contacts as well.

    For my mind TAP is the better option as it is more focused on L&D than HR. I looked at the CIPD courses and decided that I didn't want the HR side of things to muddy the waters so to speak. However, having said that, most training departments are run by HR so maybe it's worth knowing what they are up to. I just thought the HR part excessive.

    I also think the TAP courses offer better value for money particularly important as I assume you will e self-funding.

    It's worth contacting TAP as I'm not sure I didn't dream this next bit but I believe that TAP either are or are looking at becoming affiliated to CIPD which may make your decision easier

    Ultimately, the ability to add TAP or CiPD after your name is well worth the effort when applying for jobs.

    Hi Shane.

    I must admit to a conflict of interest and being slightly biased as I work as a Director of The Training Foundation. I personally undertook a CTP qualification over 20 years ago, which was very academic, and then had to go and find a 'train the trainer' to teach me how to deliver effectively. This process has repeated itself across the multiple disciplines required of an all-round trainer over the years 

    I would agree with Neil in that our courses (TAP) are L&D focused and the majority of our clients decided on the TAP route as we specialise in developing L&D solely and don't offer irrelevant HR subjects. It is also disappointing that the CIPD still won't offer higher level membership to pure L&D professionals, although this could change in the future.
