Training Strategy

Good morning

Can anyone provide any advice or suggestions on how to create an effective training strategy?

Thanks

Judith

  1. Training Strategy

An effective training strategy comes down to a few critical elements.

1: make sure you have clear objectives for the strategy and can provide an effective return on investment. Align training's critical success factors with key business drivers

    2. take the time to really understand the business and where the resources you are training fit in with the overarching business objectives

    3. engage with the right stakeholders to get access to the right resources, and guarantee time to review the strategy with key stakeholders

    4. consider all the different methods of delivery and don't be afraid to flex depending on the audience. One size rarely fits all. Think about it from each user group's perspective, what training method best suits their needs and fits into their working day?

    5. don't forget to consider educational games, gamification and social learning

    6. finally, document the strategy in detail, but also provide high level slides to present the overarching principles of your strategy to business leadership/management

    Best of luck!

    Sarah

  2. Effective Training Strategy

Here are some key questions that will help:

1 – What does your organisation want to achieve (vision, mission)?

2 – What is the organisation's strategy to achieve it (strategic objectives)?

3 – What capabilities does the organisation need to implement the strategy successfully (for example event management, customer service)?

4 – What skills and knowledge do people need to for the organisation to have the required capabilities (for example project management skills, good customer service skills)?

5 – How will we use learning and development to support individuals to develop the required skills (Learning needs analysis, learning design and development, learning delivery and learning evaluation)?

6 – How will the impact of the strategy's impact on the organisation be reviewed?

  3. Thank you

Thank you both for replying this is really useful. I have so much to learn and achieve doing this.  Can anyone point in the right direction as to where I maybe able to view a copy of a training strategy as I have not seen one before?

    Kind regards and thanks

  4. Try here

    Hi Judith

There's a free online resource available here – the third section is about how to create a training strategy.  This is based on my book Complete Training which has an example training strategy in the last chapter.  You can buy a copy hereAt checkout if you enter the code COMPTR13 you'll receive a 25% discount and free UK P&P.

Sorry for the self promotion, but I hope this helps.

  5. Sample Strategies

If you do a google search you will find a number of sample training strategies which are mostly for public sector and charities but they can give you some information on how to start. But be wary of their size. I believe that a training strategy should be no more than 3 pages, written in simple and clear language that everyone can understand. Also remember that any strategy you write is a living document which will keep evolving as you respond to changes in your organisation. You can contact me on [email protected] to ask more questions.
