The Mentoring Manual
Mike Whittaker & Ann Cartwright
Published by Gower, Gower House, Croft Road, Aldershot, Hampshire, GU11 3HR
Book format – ISBN 0-566-08147-4

A good mentoring scheme can have a transformational effect on both the people it is designed to help (the mentees) and those providing the help (the mentors). But, as with other work-based development processes, it needs commitment, reflection, planning and resources to make the scheme work.

A good book can have a similar effect on its reader if it is designed to help them rather than to preach to them. This book is certainly the former and starts off by promising not to give you the Greek definition of mentoring and all the usual useless information. The book is both a useful guide to read from start to finish as well as a handy reference manual.

The mentoring manual gives valuable insight into the requirements for a successful mentoring scheme and the qualities of an effective mentor. It is split up very logically into six chapters:

Chapter 1 – Issues in general along with the wider application and benefits
Chapter 2 – A collection of studies in a number of organisations which currently have mentoring schemes
Chapter 3 – The largest section of the book covering all the practical considerations of mentoring
Chapter 4 – Whilst chapter 3 got you thinking about what you would like to do this chapter provides you with some material to take it a step further.
Chapter 5 – Helps you develop your mentoring skills further
Chapter 6 – Writers personal reflections – a useful collection of diary notes from the authors.

An excellent catalyst for the mentoring process in your business – the only additional requirement is your commitment.
