Training budgets eaten up by travel expenses

default-16x9

Research by Parity Group shows that over £160 million is spent every year on travel expenses, resulting in less training for staff that desperately need it. This equates to approximately 40% of available training budgets. The research identified a perceived lack of regional training centres, a bias towards London as a hotbed of IT skills.

Although travel accounts for much of this expenditure - a typical business return train ticket from Manchester to London being in excess of £250 - extra cost also accumulates through hotels and expenses incurred for any courses that run over a period of days.

How much of your training budget goes on travel and accommodation? What would improve this situation for you? Post your comments below.

  1. In house provided by external trainers
Most forward thinking training companies will deliver in house training at the customer’s request. We deliver IT training via our laptop mobile set up for a number of companies. Soft skills, academic and management training is delivered in house by us to business where only the trainer travels.

I think businesses should look at training more carefully to establish their needs and then pick the flexible consultancies to deliver to their specifications.

This will of course mean that to get the best out of the training adequate facilities have to be made available including non interruption of the sessions.

  2. Customised and on-site
As a nimble and very versatile organisation we always suggest to our customers that training is local and customised to their exact needs. It is not difficult to appreciate that this soon becomes highly effective and efficient even for only a small number of participants compared with expensive city-based formulaic training. Viva flexibility!
