1. GET READY FOR M-LEARNING

Mobile learning should prove to be a useful tool for blended training that employs face-to-face and remote methods. M-learning can include anything from job aids and courseware downloaded on your personal digital assistant to Net-based, instructor-facilitated training via laptop. The keyword is wireless. But relax, the m represents the backstage delivery technology. Learning and performance are still the big stars.

2. ASTD/MASIE CENTER STUDY GAUGES LEARNER PREFERENCES

Only a little more than a third of learners polled as part of a year-long study conducted jointly by ASTD and The MASIE Center said they preferred e-learning to instructor-led classes. But most indicated they were satisfied with e-learning once they experienced it and would be willing to take additional training through technology-delivered approaches.

The Learning Technology Acceptance Study examined some 16 companies and their use of various learning technologies to deliver both mandatory and voluntary training. Participants tracked learner acceptance of learning technologies including Internet-, intranet- and CD-ROM-based e-learning as part of 29 carefully selected courses aimed at audiences that varied from 250 to several thousand participants. Preliminary results of the study were unveiled at a meeting of study sponsors in mid-December.

4. DIGITAL GAME-BASED LEARNING IN THE MILITARY

Business people are slowly "getting it." Schools get it here and there. But the U.S. military gets it big time. The military has embraced digital game-based learning with all the fervor of true believers. Why? Because it works for them. And trust me, the guys in charge of training at the Pentagon are a very sharp group. They have seen and evaluated everything.

5. MILITARY TRAINING'S OTHER MISSIONS: SCHOOLS AND STANDARDS

As if training the military wasn't enough, the joint-staff training office must build e-learning modules that outlast the latest technology. Here's how military trainers are creating common standards for reuse and interoperability of training technologies.
