The latest report from the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training's Electronic Training Village finds that a third of basic skills programmes are now encorporating some kind of online learning delivery, with another third planning to use it by the end of the year.

The ETV survey found that hardware and internet access are readily available for around 60% of training providers working with basic skills, but that skills to use the technology are still lacking, with only 40% of trainers rating their abilities to use e-learning as good. However, most view e-learning as having a positive role to play in developing basic skills, with 85% also saying they felt that e-learning would result in innovation and improvements in teaching for adult basic skills provision.

The survey also reveals there is a bottleneck in servicing teacher and trainer training needs, and suggests that achieving the potential expressed for e-learning and basic skills is dependent on meeting the training needs of teachers and trainers.
