Learning that is delivered via a laptop, desktop, tablet or smartphone (and not in the classroom) is known as online learning. As opposed to classroom learning where the majority of the learning delivery with the trainer and trainee present (bar some additional flipped delivery or post-classroom follow-up), online learning can be delivered synchronously (eg webinars, hangouts, web and twitter chats) or asynchronously (eg click-next elearning, self-paced video lectures), The debate rages on as to whether online learning can match the engagement and retention levels of classroom training.
