Even though they have proliferated largely through educational institutions, the first successful Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) was run not by academics but two Google employees. MOOCs have had potential in the corporate space since the very beginning. The term was first coined in 2008, although it took until about 2012 for MOOCs to truly popularise. To truly be a MOOC, the course must be Massive, i.e. scalable into the thousands, Open, i.e. free and/or with low to no barriers to entry, and Online i.e. the whole course is studied over the web. Their use in business is usually as part of a blend, often as part of a flipped training model or as study post-classroom event.
