A new survey has revealed that public sector managers view leadership as more important than ever since the onset of the downturn.
Research by occupational psychology firm Mendas found that over 70% of managers consider the demonstration of leadership qualities as more important than before the recession.
The findings also indicate that other the ability to spot where cuts can be made, adaptability to changing job demands, and being comfortable with uncertainty, were all other qualities that were deemed to have become more important.
“What this has demonstrated is the need for managers to step up to the plate and provide clear direction to their people during these difficult times," says Dr Simon Draycott, director and occupational psychologiest at Mendas. "Whilst important, simply seeking to cut costs is not enough unless employees are galvanised by strong leadership.”
Draycott adds that the key to instilling leadership qualities lies in robust assessment for both recruitment and people development.
“With so many skilled people from the private sector joining the ranks of the unemployed, there is a real opportunity for the public sector to attract the talent it needs to professionalise still further," he concluded. "This can only be achieved if the right assessment processes are in place to identify those with the potential to become the leaders of tomorrow.”
