Performance record for PeopleSoft payroll applications

default-16x9

Reaffirming its dominance in the networked data center, Sun Microsystems, Inc. has reported a record performance result on PeopleSoft Payroll 7.5, the world's most widely used human resources payroll application.

The Sun Enterprise(TM) 10000 (a.k.a. Starfire(TM)) server processed an astounding 437,000 paychecks per hour -- the fastest performance result of any platform -- almost doubling the performance of the previous published benchmark on PeopleSoft. On the same benchmark, the mid-range powerhouse Sun Enterprise(TM) 6500 server succeeded in matching mainframe throughput by processing 256,000 paychecks per hour.

For the Sun Enterprise 10000 server tests, Sun extended PeopleSoft's sample payroll database to 1.2 million active employees and achieved a rate of more than 280,000 paychecks per hour. This result, higher than any other published result, positions Sun to handle the payroll needs of the largest enterprises and governments in the world.

"Today's record-breaking performance results prove once again that customers can rely on PeopleSoft and Sun to manage their mission-critical applications across the enterprise," said Marc Stillman, vice president, Alliance Solutions at PeopleSoft. "Crucial enterprise applications built on PeopleSoft and Sun such as payroll form the foundation for eBusiness solutions upon which organizations can more effectively leverage their core competencies."

Additionally, these best-in-class performance results demonstrate that the award-winning Sun Enterprise server family, running the robust Solaris(TM) Operating Environment software, paired with the family of Sun StorEdge (TM) disk arrays, is the equivalent of 3000 mainframe MIPs. Also, the Starfire's unique combination of Dynamic System Domains and InterDomain Networking allows for the consolidation of PeopleSoft's application tier and database into a single server.

"Working together, Sun and PeopleSoft have maximized system performance to meet customers' most demanding situations," said Darryl Parker, senior director, market development, for Sun Microsystems. "This is especially significant for data center customers who can now obtain superior system performance without requiring a mainframe-priced system."

The PeopleSoft Payroll 7.5 performance tests measure the application's performance range in processing volumes in specific configurations -- paysheet creation, payroll calculation and payroll confirmation. These performance results assist IT managers in making buying decisions about necessary hardware, software, services and network configurations to run their payroll systems.

PeopleSoft's Enterprise Resource Planning solution won Datamation's "1999 Product of the Year," making it the second consecutive year that readers have ranked the PeopleSoft ERP product ahead of those offered by its major competitors.
