Discovery TV – from passive viewing to active learning

default-16x9

Discovery Communications Europe is working on a project to identify the most effective means of moving members of Discovery’s UK audience along the path from passive viewing to active learning. The viewers will be taken through a series of incremental steps along the path to active learning. Discovery believe this to be the best way to capture viewers who have traditionally felt alienated from education. Viewers will have the opportunity to go deeper into a topic that interests them by turning to other media within their homes - teletext, the Web, or printed fact sheets which can be ordered by phone.
Support material available through these media will provide:

* further general coverage of the topic covered in the related programme

* information highlighting the importance of the featured technologies and skills to our everyday lives

* case studies on people whose jobs build on these technologies and skills

* a list of related books and materials that can be found at libraries, museums, local events exhibitions and web sites

* finally, there will be a list of types of courses that would enable the viewer to develop these skills and technological understanding, taking care to highlight the accessibility of the range of commitment that is possible. Discovery would then put viewers in touch with Learning Direct to find out about specific courses in their local area

Using a span of media will ensure that support material is accessible to all demographic groups and will enable Discovery to determine the most popular and effective media for these initiatives.
