Insight: What are the options other than clearing?

Deciding not to go to university could be the start, say ICAEW.

Commenting on this morning’s ‘A’ level results, Mark Protherough, Executive Director, Learning Professional Development, ICAEW, said:
“It is great to see so many of our young people achieving such good grades but results day is no longer all about university and clearing. The business and academic landscape is changing, and in the past year we’ve seen a marked increase in students investigating non-graduate routes into accountancy.
“As a leading professional body, we have been working tirelessly to increase the range of alternative entry routes into the profession, to meet the demands of both students and employers. The Professional Services Higher Apprenticeship is just one of the schemes offering an alternative to this year’s A-level achievers, many of whom may today realise university is not the only option.
“Other routes into Chartered Accountancy include our strategic university partnerships like the Manchester Metropolitan University programme, the Certificate in Finance Accounting and Business (CFAB) or Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) fast track scheme.
“Of course university is a great experience and will still suit many, but a vocational path could serve some people much better. In fact, they could progress to higher-level professional study and qualification in accountancy at the same pace as someone with a degree.
“Students with good A-level results can research the opportunities with organisations they are interested in working for, and a good starting point is the careers section of our ICAEW website. It explains the range of ACA training opportunities available and how to apply.
