Key Skills Week – South West

As part of its Key Skills Programme, The Department for Education and Employment is running a series of sessions early next year in Bristol and Plymouth in a week designed to provide information for anyone involved in work-based training.

A series of sessions will be held in Bristol on 5 and 6 February and in Plymouth on 7 and 8 February will consist of workshops, training courses and a 'materials marketplace' where a range of useful materkals and resources will be available.

Topics for the training courses are:

  • Leading from the top - the strategic implications of key skills, for owners and managers of training providers
  • Key skills 2000 - introducing the revised Key Skills Units, the new Key Skills Qualification and changes in assessment
  • Application of number - teaching number techniques to trainees
  • Communication - teaching communication techniques to trainees

Topics for workshops to be held are:

  • Writing assignments for key skills - how to create opportunities for trainees to develop their key skills and produce good quality, relevant evidence
  • Building key skills into induction - how to structure induction and build in activities for trainees to learn about the key skills
  • Working with employers on key skills - how to encourage employers to participate by motivating trainees and providing a work-based context for key skills activities
  • The wider key skills - how to build the wider key skills into training programmes and encourage trainees to take control of their learning

Training courses cost £50 per delegate to attend (Key skills 2000 is £25), and all workshops cost £25 to attend. For more information, visit
