New Deal reaching intended targets

default-16x9

Latest government figures show that the New Deal is continuing to help young unemployed people into jobs - the latest figures show 229,600 in work with over 12,000 young people finding work in June alone.

Education and Employment Minister Malcolm Wicks commented:

"We have now helped nearly 230,000 young people into work. The New Deal is closing in on our target of 250,000 young people into work by the end of this Parliament. The latest statistics show that we are now just 20,000 people short.

"That’s very good news for the young people themselves and very good news for the economy. Long term youth unemployment is now at its lowest since the mid 1970s."

The Government Statistical Service figures also show that over 147,700 young people have been helped with education, training or job experience:

  • 77,800 in Full Time Education and Training;
  • 35,800 on the Voluntary Sector Option;
  • 34,100 on the Environment Task Force.
