After lisitening to podcasts available on the Managers Tools and Think Training & Development websites

I'm keen to get involved with designing my own podcasts! Trouble is I don't really know where to start...When I Google 'Make your own podcasts' it seems like there are millions of options and I'm getting a bit lost in all the detail.

Ideally I'd like to launch them on my companies internal website (not via Itunes)

If there is someone in the know that can provide me some suggestions on the most quickest and straight forward way of getting started that would great.

Thank you.

     Hi Adam,

Quickest and easiest way of doing it is using the Microsoft built in tool Window Movie Maker. All you need is a microphone and a topic!

Simply record, edit, add music, visuals if need be and save as MP3 file.

Then add to your website. If you have access to your company website Content Management System you can do this yourself…or you might need to consult the IT department.

It really is a simple, no hassle option and doesn’t require Itunes.

Take a look at our range of free podcasts at http://www.toojays.co.uk/library/podcasts/   These can be downloaded and played immediately.

The only variables are around the quality of microphone and editing tools. But Microsoft Movie Maker is a great sarting point.

Let me know if you need anymore information.

  2. Podcasts

    Hi Adam,

Two things to get you started – a microphone with a USB connection, like the one below

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=samson+g-track&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=7077090733&ref=pd_sl_206b4l0ouv_e

I’ve seen them cheaper than this (about £86)

Then download this bit of free software

    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Not in any way disagreeing with the above post – but Audacity is dedicated for the job.

And away you go! Next step after you’ve had an initial play would be upping your sound quality by looking at the blog below

    http://www.articulate.com/rapid-elearning/4-simple-tips-for-recording-high-quality-audio/

Quick hint – make friends with your techie team to get your casts ‘up.

  3. In a similar vein…

In a similar vein… can anyone recommend any decent, regular L&D/training podcasts?

  4. Samson C03U Multi-Pattern Studio USB Condensor Microphone

    Hi Adam!

I use this mic and recommend it for its very useful two-way mode, which means you can record interview-style podcasts with just the one mic.

I have both parties sit opposite each other at the corner of a desk.  Seems to pick up both voices well that way.

I capture the audio into Audacity or occasionally use the podcast recording output mode in Articulate.

  5. We tried this…

    Hi Adam,

We done a bit of research into podcasts to do something similar to what you mentioned.  Although we haven’t decided to go fully with it yet we tried the following:

We used the Audacity software mentioned in an earlier post which is designed for and perfect for the job.

We also looked at a piece of software called Podcast Generator.  Its free and sits on your webserver.  It’s build on SMARTY Templates (I think) so you can change the look and feel of it.  You can download it from here http://podcastgen.sourceforge.net/.

As for what it looks like, here is the test site we were messing about with http://www.leadingfromthefront.co.uk/streams/ (this site is work in progress).

In order to stream them from the site they have to be in MP3, but Audacity can convert it into MP3 for you.

Good luck and I hope this is useful.
